DoubleVerify launches ChatGPT Ads attribution via DV Rockerbox

DoubleVerify (NYSE: DV) has launched attribution measurement for ChatGPT Ads through its DV Rockerbox product, enabling advertisers to treat the channel as a trackable touchpoint within their broader multi-channel attribution models. The announcement, made on 5 October 2026, also includes a brand suitability pilot being developed jointly with OpenAI, designed to assess conversational context at scale without accessing private user conversations.

The attribution capability allows marketers to evaluate ChatGPT Ads alongside paid search, social and display channels, comparing cost-per-acquisition and return on ad spend rather than viewing the channel in isolation. Weight Watchers is cited as an early adopter: using DV Rockerbox, the company measured a cost per acquisition 15.3% below its established benchmark during the pilot period. Jake Dmochowski, VP of Growth at Weight Watchers, said the tool gave the business "an encouraging early signal and greater clarity as we evaluate how to scale."

Brand suitability in conversational AI

Alongside attribution, DV and OpenAI are working through a controlled pilot to evaluate brand risk in conversational settings. The challenge is structurally different from display or video: the context around an ad placement shifts with every exchange in a chat thread, meaning static keyword-block lists or page-level scoring tools used in traditional brand safety are of limited use.

Mark Zagorski, chief executive of DV, framed the problem plainly: "Conversational environments are fundamentally different because context is dynamic. What a user asks, how the AI responds and how the conversation evolves can all shape the environment in which an ad appears." DV says the pilot is designed to let independent partners assess and inform OpenAI's brand suitability policies without accessing underlying user data, though the technical mechanism for doing so was not disclosed in detail.

Both capabilities sit within DV's Media AdVantage Platform, which combines media verification, the Scibids AI optimisation layer and Rockerbox attribution under a single commercial offering.

Market context

ChatGPT began introducing advertising capabilities in 2026 as OpenAI accelerated its path to commercialisation. The move brings it into territory already occupied by Google, Meta and Amazon, each of which has built attribution and brand suitability tooling directly into their ad-buying interfaces. Third-party measurement vendors such as DV, Integral Ad Science and Nielsen sit alongside those walled-garden tools, offering advertisers independent verification that does not rely on the platform marking its own homework.

The brand suitability challenge for conversational AI has no settled solution across the industry. The Interactive Advertising Bureau has opened working groups on AI-generated content and advertising standards, but a specific framework for chat-native ad placements has not yet been finalised. Regulators in the EU, under the AI Act's transparency obligations, and in the UK, under the CMA's ongoing digital-markets work, are likely to take an interest in how conversational ad environments disclose AI involvement to users and how brand risk is managed.

For DV, the ChatGPT integration is also a competitive positioning move. The company has faced pressure on growth as cookie deprecation has reshaped the measurement market and platform-native tools have improved. Securing an early partnership with OpenAI for an emerging ad surface gives DV a reference case ahead of rivals and puts it at the table as OpenAI writes the policy rules that will govern third-party access to its advertising infrastructure. Whether the brand suitability pilot becomes a productised, scalable offering will depend on OpenAI's willingness to expose enough contextual signal to make independent scoring reliable without compromising user privacy.
